What You Should Know About Chandeliers

By Danny Ricks

Chandeliers used to be a sign of a wealthy and high social status. These are usually found in elegant houses and expensive restaurants of the rich people. However, modern house designers are using chandeliers regardless the type of house. These are installed to add accent to any room, adding beauty and class. Any room with a chandelier is always noticed and appreciated.

Not all chandeliers are fancy and elegant. A wide collection of various chandeliers are now available in the market. There are several designs, colors and shapes as well. You can choose from crystal chandeliers, stained, stained glass, contemporary, teacup or even colonial chandelier available for you home. They are now appearing to any part of the room including dining room, living room, bedroom, kitchen and entryway. You can even put them in bathrooms. But before buying your own, you may want to consider these few factors to help you decide what chandelier is best for you.

These can be expensive but not matter what chandelier you choose, the first thing you have to consider is the place you will install it. It should compliment with the architectural design and theme of your house. It is practical to consider the architectural design of your house as well as the its ambiance and atmosphere because you do not expect to replace your chandelier every now and then.

You should also take into consideration the size of your room. It is awkward to have a very big chandelier in a small room. It will make the room look much smaller. Choose for the right size. If you plan to place it on your living room and your ceiling is quite high, you may opt to have a grand crystal chandelier. If your ceiling is low, you can still have a grand chandelier but choose a design that has fewer layers on it. You should be able to determine the safe distance of your chandeliers.

If you are clueless to how you will decide the right size, you can take this as a guide: First, take the measurement of your room and add them up to get the appropriate circumference of your chandelier. This rule is ideal for bedroom, bathrooms, living room, hall or entrance. If for example you have a 15 ft by 13 ft room, then your circumference should be about 28 inches. If you have a high ceiling, you add up to 6 more inches to its circumference. Also, make sure also that your chandelier is hung at least 7 ft from the floor. This head clearance is sufficient enough to prevent bumping your head into them.

In the dining room, choose a chandelier that is half the size of your table. Avoid installing something that is wider than your dinner table. Let it hang at about 30 to 36 inches above the top of your table for good illumination. This height is also a prevention for bump heads as well.

Lighting requirements are also important. You do not want your guests blinding due to too much light. Be sure to use always the right wattage that your chandelier has recommended. Some chandeliers have dimmers that can enable you to adjust lighting depending on the amount of light you require.

Take care of your chandelier. These are quite expensive so you need to take good care of it. You are not required to clean it up everyday as it is not practical and necessary. Cleaning it once or twice a year is sufficient to keep it shiny. As a precaution, always make sure that you have turned off the lights before starting cleaning it to prevent accidents.
