The Myth Of Using Laxatives To Lose Weight

By Chris Greenspan

More than half of the people in the United States want to lose weight. Sadly, way too many of them want to achieve weight loss by taking shortcuts rather than actually changing their lifestyles and eating habits. Using laxatives to lose weight is a shortcut that has been heavily abused. Using laxatives will not, cannot, help your efforts to lose weight.

Laxatives do NOT break down the foods that one eats. They encourage bowel movements, often bring about uncomfortable cramps and stimulate the urge to immediately to go the bathroom. Waste material often comes out very quickly as a result of these cramps. Regrettably, most of this fecal matter is comprised of water. While it is true that by using laxatives you may drop a few pounds, what people don't realize is that once our bodies rehydrate, the weight comes back.

Not only that, overuse of laxatives can cause some serious health issues on its own. Use laxatives too long and your body will lose the ability to have a natural bowel movement. The rectum is forcing out waste, it can often suffer skin tearing, which causes bleeding and the risk of infection that is caused by waste coming in contact with the open tears around the rectal area. And the resulting dehydration can wreak havoc on your immune system, leaving you sick and weak.

There are those who insist that laxatives will help you achieve your goal weight and help you keep the weight off. These people are either lying or just don't know what they're talking about. In truth, using laxatives to lose weight could be tantamount to an eating disorder, much like bulimia. The only real difference between bulimia and using laxatives for weight loss is that bulimics force themselves to vomit their food up and use laxatives to eliminate anything that remains, while those who use laxatives follow a milder method do not usually make themselves vomit.

There are times, however, when a laxative used over too long a period of time can cause a person to feel nauseated and induce vomiting. Sadly, medical intervention will probably be necessary to wean a person off of laxatives once they start abusing them in this fashion.

A few people might say that laxative use is an effective means of losing weight. Using laxatives, or any medication, for a quick-fix to your long-term weight loss goal is a fairytale; a fairytale that is not only absurd, but potentially deadly.
