Methods For Growing A New Grass Lawn

By Richard Dederly

A new lawn is perhaps the quickest and easiest way to make the outside of your home looking its best. Whether you are starting a new lawn to put a lawn where one has not existed before or if you are looking to replace an existing lawn, you will have a number of different choices. The right choice for you may depend on how much time and money you are willing to put into starting your new lawn.

The most inexpensive way to start a lawn is to use seed. Before spreading the seed, you will want to ensure the soil is soft enough to allow for the roots of the seed to take hold. This may require the soil to be tilled. Once the soil is prepared, spread the seed using a spreader. Although the seed can be scattered by hand, this often leads to a lawn that will have uneven patches of grass. Next, use a rake to mix the seed into the soil. You may also want to cover with a thin layer of mulch and to keep the seeds moist until the lawn takes root into the soil.

Many believe the best and quickest results can be achieved by using sod to build your new lawn. Sod is typically grown by local growers and sold at the local garden store. Therefore, you can be assured that the type of lawn used will be suited to grow in your area. Sod can be shaped to fit your new lawn area by using a knife to cut around obstacles in your lawn. Although the results are typically favorable, the cost of using sod may not make it the best choice for you.

Grass plugs are another option to start a new lawn. Plugs are best suited for warm weather that will allow them to spread quickly. These small pieces of grass with roots are planted thought your new lawn area. Once the roots take hold into the soil, the grass seedlings will continue to grow and fill in the spots without grass.

Clearly, there are several options available when you are ready to build a lawn. The right choice for you may depend on how much you are willing to spend. For the quickest results, grass sod would get you a lawn looking great fast. However, many believe that distributing seed is the easiest and cheapest way to get your lawn started. Whatever option you choose, your new lawn will add value to your home and help to let visitors know that you care about the appearance of your home.
