Hydroponic Cultivation Techniques for Indoor Planting

By Steven Thomas

Hydroponic growing methods have been researched for a long time and are presently used by many different gardeners. There are now many different soilless methods that can be utilized to grow a range of different herbs in just about any environment.

In order to install a complete hydroponic system there are a few aspects that must be thought out; an irrigation technique, grow medium, grow lamps, and maintenance of the environment. Every flower species can have different requirements so the best garden systems are able to provide the optimum setting for whatever flower is being raised.

When setting up a system it is important that all of these components are good for the plants or herb types you are growing. All species of plants can have slightly different requirements.

One of the important aspects of any soilless method is the medium. Hydroponics means using just water as a grow medium as opposed to soil, although certain methods use inert substances as grow mediums.

All hydroponics uses special nutrient filled concentrations to feed herbs. Some systems suspend a plants root structure in solution while others deliver through inert substances such as expanded clay, coir, vermiculite, gravel, and wood fiber.

Hydroponic systems that hang roots in solution only can either be constant flow systems or static techniques. No matter the grow medium solution can either be delivered up from the bottom wth sub-irrigation or from above in top irrigation. There are a few techniques intended to maintain both nutrient and oxygen delivery called aeroponic, flood and drain, and passive sub-irrigation.

Light is an important part of every hydroponic technique and can impact plant size and quality. The most common kinds of bulbs utilized for indoor growing are fluorescent lights, LED lights, high pressure sodium bulbs, and metal halide bulbs. These lamps can be utilized in combination to achieve the best growth.

Beyond giving your plants with the nutrients they need and light they require it is also critical to make sure that the environment stays appropriate for them. An appropriate environment means fresh air is circulated, adequate gas levels, proper humidity, and no pests.
